Guest column - How Hampton is addressing the possible loss of JFCOM

JFCOMBy Bruce Sturk
Director of Federal Facilities Support,
City of Hampton

Secretary of Defense Robert Gates announcement that he intends to close United States Joint Forces Command (JFCOM), based in Norfolk and with an annex in Suffolk, should serve as a wake up call for residents in Hampton, as well as the Hampton Roads region as a whole.

While the proposed closure would most certainly create significant economic impacts to the region, more important is how the potential impact to joint training could be harmful to our national security.

In the early 1980’s, congress became increasingly concerned that our separate military branches (Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force) were ill equipped and inadequately prepared to fight as a cohesive joint team.  In 1986, the federal government passed the Goldwater-Nichols Department of Defense Reorganization Act of 1986. According to Wikipedia, it was "an attempt to fix problems caused by inter-service rivalry which had emerged during the Vietnam War, contributed to the catastrophic failure of the Iranian hostage rescue mission in 1980, and which were still evident in the invasion of Grenada in 1983."

1927 aerial MapFrom Flora J. Randall,
Secretary, Northampton Civic League

Do you remember when Todd’s Lane and Big Bethel Road in the Northampton area of Hampton were merely dusty and somewhat rough dirt roads? How about when most of the surrounding area near these roads was still rural and cows, horses and chickens roamed freely as a normal part of the landscape?

If you can actually remember a Northampton like this (or know someone who can), or grew up here or have lived here for many years; or owned and or worked in a local business; or have belonged for a while to one of the local churches, organizations, or schools  - then members of the Northampton Civic League (NHCL) want to talk to you.

OK. You've put a lot of work into making your home a nice place to live, but maybe there's a home or business near you whose owner doesn't seem to care so much about theirs and it's impacting the quality of life for you and your neighbors. Who do you turn to for help?

In most cities, the answer is something like Hampton's Department of Codes Compliance. On Tuesday, Codes Compliance Director Steve Shapiro will be the guest host for "Virtual Lunch with Mayor Ward."

The weekly live online chat takes place from noon to 1 p.m. every Tuesday on the Hampton Commons website, http://hamptoncommons.com, and in this case will offer property owners and residents an opportunity to ask Shapiro questions about how his department works, not to mention what they can do to try to keep their neighborhoods safe and desirable.

By the staff of the Hampton Emergency Preparedness Bureau

Hurricane Season is gearing up. Are you prepared?

The National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) has found that over the last 100 years August through the end of October tends to be when most Hurricanes occur. NOAA’s 2010 Atlantic Hurricane Season Outlook is predicting an above normal season. Are you ready for the heavy rain, high water and winds that normally accompany a hurricane?

There is no better time for Hampton residents to get ready for emergencies than September, which is National Preparedness Month and the height of hurricane/flood season.

Guest Editorial - Steiner's guidance will help Downtown Hampton blossom

DowntownWaterfrontBy Perry Pilgrim
President, DHDP

In reading the Daily Press article entitled "Peninsula Town Center guru to be paid $45,000 for downtown Hampton plan"  (August 18, 2010), I was pleased with their factual reporting of the Downtown Hampton Development Partnership's (DHDP) recent decision to contract with Yaromir Steiner, the chief executive of Steiner and Associates. Mr Steiner is responsible for the magnificent makeover of the former Coliseum Mall. The resulting Peninsula Town Center is concrete evidence of Steiner's experience and expertise in the business of re-establishing struggling retail market places.

The Downtown Hampton situation is clearly different than the Coliseum Mall project. The mall was owned and controlled by virtually one business entity while the downtown is a district comprised of numerous individual owners, with a number of city owned properties added to the mix. Decisions made and actions taken by one owner are clearly easier to effect than group efforts. At DHDP we refer to ourselves as the proverbial "herding of kittens".

LCA-Schools This Tuesday, Mayor Molly Ward will turn her  live chat session, "Virtual Lunch with Mayor Ward" over to representatives from Hampton City Schools.

The weekly live online chat takes place from noon to 1 p.m. every Tuesday on the Hampton Commons website, http://hamptoncommons.com.

With Labor Day just around the corner, there's probably little that parents have more on their minds than the prospect of their kids heading back to school. As that date gets closer, local media will provide lots of good general information about local school systems, as well as telling stories about how kids and their families are getting ready and offering consumer tips.

But the city of Hampton also wants to provide its residents with an opportunity to directly ask school administrators any questions they might have.
